Planting with Foresight — Spring Bulbs Beyond the Basics

As autumn settles in, most gardeners reach for their bulb lasagnes — layering tulips and narcissi in pots for a big spring show. It’s a tried-and-tested idea, but there’s a whole world beyond the pot waiting to be explored.

This month, let’s think about planting bulbs with foresight — not just by depth, but by timing, texture, and longevity.

1. Plan for a Flowering Sequence

Instead of one dramatic week of colour, you can have months of changing interest. Try pairing:

  • Early bloomers: snowdrops, crocus, iris reticulata

  • Mid-season stars: narcissi, fritillaria, tulips

  • Late colour: alliums, camassia, or ornamental onions

2. Tuck Bulbs Into Unexpected Places

Scatter crocus and miniature narcissi through lawns. Slip camassia into damp borders. Pop tulips between shrubs or perennials where they can rise through bare stems in spring. Bulbs love a good surprise.

3. Pair for Texture and Contrast

Mix tulips with euphorbia for zingy contrast, or let ferns and wood anemones soften bright narcissi. Think of bulbs as your spring fireworks — best when grounded by steady perennials beneath.

🌱 Tip of the Month

Buy firm, healthy bulbs now and plant them twice as deep as the bulb’s height. Feed with a handful of compost or bulb fertiliser to give them a good start.
